Coating Measurement

The challenging operating conditions of vehicles and machines place high demands on the performance characteristics or the corrosion resistance of individual components.

For this reason, special coatings are developed to ensure reliability and functionality. Quality assurance demands a fast evaluation of this type of coating. Certain substances that are contained in these coatings are usually capable of showing fluorescence. The corresponding intensity provides information on the thickness of the coating examined.

1. Example of Use

Coating thickness check of a mineral-polymer corrosion protection coating of a cover of a unit in a car.

Substance to be detected: Mineral-polymer corrosion protection coating
Surface: Steel, deep-drawn
Measuring head: Standard, dia.= 6mm, stainless steel, without optics
Measuring head position: Above the surface to be examined
Distance to the surface: 10 mm
Source of light: Microchip laser
Wavelength: 266 nm
Light conductor: 0.5 m quartz glass fibre
Surface/measuring point: 5 mm²
Evaluation time/measuring point: 1 second
Measuring points/component: 5

2. Example of Use

Monitoring of the application of oil on rolled plate.

Substance to be detected: Corrosion protection oil
Surface: Aluminium plate
Measuring head: Standard, dia.= 6mm, stainless steel, with optics
Measuring head position: By means of appropriate optics above the
surface to be examined
Distance to the surface: 22 mm
Source of light: Microchip laser
Wavelength: 355 nm
Light conductor: 5.5 m quartz glass fibre
Surface/measuring point: 32 mm²
Evaluation time/measuring point: 1 second
Measuring points/component: 2
